70 Fuel Cell Mercedes-Benz Vehicles Will Deploy in California

Mercedes-Benz recently announced that they will deploy 70 fuel cell vehicles onto California roads by 2012. The B-class Mercedes-Benz vehicles are designed to have a 270-mile driving range on one tank of hydrogen and take less than five minutes to refuel. The cars are also certified by the EPA as zero-emission vehicles for the 2011 model year.

First Consumer Get His Chevy Volt

The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in series hybrid vehicle to be produced by General Motors, expected to be launched as a 2011 model with production currently slated to begin in 2010. The Volt's propulsion system will be based on GM's new E-Flex platform.

Unlike current commercially available hybrids, the actual propulsion of the Volt is accomplished by the electric motor, as the internal combustion engine (ICE) is not mechanically connected to the wheels. With fully charged batteries, this electric power may be sourced exclusively from its onboard lithium-ion batteries, for up to 40 miles, a distance capable of satisfying the daily commute of 75% of Americans, which averages around 33 miles.

California buyers of the Nissan Leaf electric car can get steep discounts thanks to state and local incentives.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Nissan Leaf will carry a price tag of $32,500, but some California residents could drive one for just about $17,000 -- roughly the cost of a typical gas-powered compact sedan.
That low, low price is thanks to incentives from the federal government, which offers a $7,500 tax credit to buyers of plug-in cars; the state of California, which offers a $5,000 rebate; and local governments in California's San Joaquin Valley, which offer another $3,000 in rebates.
